نیومن در کالج دارتموث (Dartmouth College) در رشتۀ تاریخ، دوره لیسانس خود را دریافت کرد و دوره‌های فوق‌لیسانس و دکتری خود را در رشتۀ مطالعات اسلامی از دانشگاه کالیفرنیا (University of California) گرفت.

نیومن در تاریخ شیعه، فقه اسلامی، تاریخ ایران، فرهنگ خاورمیانه، زبان و ادبیّات فارسی و عربی تحقیق و پژوهش کرده است. وی همچنین به پژوهش در تاریخ طبّ اسلامی و ادبیّات ایران علاقمند است و آثاری در این زمینه به چاپ رسانده است. وی در سال 1996م. بورسیه‌ای در تاریخ پژشکی از دانشگاه آکسفورد (Oxford University) دریافت کرد. وی همچنین مؤسس مجلۀ اخبار و منابع شیعه (Shi’I News and Resources) می‌باشد.
